What are crowns?

Crowns are cosmetic restorations that protect and rebuild damaged or decayed teeth. This tooth-shaped cap fits directly over the visible portion of your tooth, called the crown. In addition to improving the appearance of your tooth, a crown restores its function. It also provides a barrier to stop your tooth from enduring additional damage.

What can crowns treat?

Crowns are among the most popular restorative and cosmetic treatments that Dr. Tomase performs. He may recommend a crown to:

  • Protect a cracked, broken, or fractured tooth
  • Restore a misshapen tooth
  • Repair function in a tooth worn from bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Cement a dental bridge in place
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Protect a tooth treated with root canal therapy
  • Cover a dental implant

Depending on your needs, Dr. Tomase may place a single crown or multiple to restore the appearance and function of your teeth.

What is the crown process like?

Crowns take two visits to plan and place. During your first visit, Dr. Tomase performs a dental exam and teeth cleaning that includes X-rays. Next, he carefully files and reshapes your teeth to prepare for your impressions. With an intraoral scanner onsite, Dr. Tomase offers mess-free impressions. Digital impressions are more accurate and comfortable than traditional molds.

Once your impressions are finished, Dr. Tomase sends them off to an outside lab to create your custom-made crowns. This process takes 2-3 weeks, so protecting your teeth is essential in the meantime. Before you leave your first appointment, Dr. Tomase fits you for temporary crowns.

Dr. Tomase places your permanent crowns upon your second visit. After removing your temporary restorations, he fits your new crowns over your teeth. He then makes any necessary adjustments before cementing them in place.

How long do crowns last?

Metal-free crowns last for about 15 years on average, but you can extend their lifespan with the right care. To ensure your ceramic crowns last, Dr. Tomase may recommend:

  • Avoiding sticky, chewy, or overly hard foods
  • Brushing and flossing twice a day
  • Using a night guard if you have bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Visiting for teeth cleanings twice a year

If your crown cracks, loosens, or falls out during an accident or injury, contact Dr. Tomase right away for emergency treatment.
